Why consider private pay with Signal Mountain Speech and Development?

Being private pay allows for the professionals and families to have better control of the child’s frequency of services and plan of care. This service model also provides flexible scheduling, direct parent education for improved carryover skills, time for collaboration with teachers/other professionals, and one-on-one individualized treatment plans.

What areas of town does your practice cover?

Signal Mountain Speech and Development will provide services to families within the Signal Mountain, Walden, Lone Oak, Chattanooga, Sequatchie, and surrounding areas. Services are typically provided at the clinic, a daycare, or a preschool. The place of service can be discussed when scheduling for the initial evaluation to establish the child’s plan of care.

What can I expect from an initial evaluation?

If a child does not have a recent speech-language evaluation, within the year, from another clinic or current Individualized Education Plan (IEP) through the school system, then a full initial evaluation will need to be completed in order to establish an appropriate plan of care. It is recommended that children have passed hearing and vision screenings prior to the evaluation. The plan of care will detail a child’s background, their assessment results, make recommendations, and create goals for therapy if it is recommended.

After scheduling the evaluation, you will receive an email with a link to the paperwork that will need to be completed beforehand. The evaluation will last 1-1.5/2 hours depending on the child’s needs. There will be typically be a parent/caregiver interview, an oral mechanism exam, standardized or criterion-referenced formal testing, professional observation which may include language or speech sampling, and time to discuss the observations as well as ask questions.

What should I bring to the initial evaluation?

Please bring any previous paperwork from other clinics or healthcare professionals, a school IEP or most recent progress report if appropriate, and make sure your child is wearing their glasses if they need them. It is also important that your child has had a good night of sleep and has eaten/drank well that day. Parents are welcome to stay during the evaluation unless their child has difficulty concentrating or participating with them present.
